Facts about cane toads

Protect your pets from cane toads
In early 1935, a box containing 102 toads from Hawaii arrived in Gordonvale, a small town south of Cairns. It would turn out that Gordonvale would become "ground-zero" for Australia's cane toad problem. They were introduced in an effort to eat cane beetles that were reducing sugar cane harvests. After a short time in captivity, the population had multiplied to reach 3000. In July 1935, the cane toads were released into the fields.

The plan backfired completely. As it turns out, cane toads cannot jump very high, only about two feet so they did not eat the beetles that usually lived in the upper stalks of cane plants. Instead of going after the beetles, as growers had planned, the cane toads began going after everything else in sight including native insects, bird’s eggs and native frogs. And because the toads are poisonous, they began to kill would-be predators. The toll on native species has been disasterous.

  • Cane toads can grow to a length of 24cm and can weigh up to 2.5kg.

  • Toads have now spread as far north as Kakadu and Darwin and are steadily moving towards the Heritage listed Kimberly’s. Toads have been discovered in New South wales as far south as Sydney.

  • Toads have contributed to the decline of our native frogs and other wildlife and upset the fragile ecological balance.

  • Poison glands located on each side of a toad’s head secrete a toxin which is extremely poisonous to native animals and domestic pets if licked or eaten. This poison, if sprayed in the eye, can blind humans and animals.

  • The cane toad is a nuisance when they invade suburban areas during the warmer months of the year when they breed.
